App to easily track and reduce personal climate footprints

eco.income engineering is a very early stage startup from Hamburg (not founded yet). We will help the masses in the western world to become more aware of and change their unsustainable consumption behavior. For this we are building a cutting-edge App to easily track and reduce personal climate footprints. 

As we will calculate the consumption based climate footprints (GHG emissions) of our users mainly on the basis of their financial spending data, we need to develop a scientifically solid method for determining the climate impacts per monetary unit (x kg CO2e / €) for diverse consumption categories. Therefore we are looking for a motivated and conscientious master student interested in conducting his/her Master thesis on the topic:

Measurement of consumption based personal climate footprints on the basis of financial spending data – development of a method for deriving GHG emission intensities per monetary unit for end user consumption 

Work packages:

  • Screening of all available frameworks and methods behind GHG intensities, such as environmentally extended multi regional input-output tables (EE-MRIOT) in combination with customer expenditure surveys (CES); selection for analysis
  • Define analysis criteria and conduct analysis, under special consideration of (1) emission allocation techniques (production sectors to consumption categories) and (2) qualitative deviation within consumption categories, i.e. the differences in GHG intensity depending on the quality of consumption, e.g. 1 € spent on nutrition when being a vegetarian has a different emission intensity when preferring meat emphasized food. Here the potentials and barriers of life cycle assessment (LCA) are also of interest
  • Determine most appropriate method for our case and validate it: calculate GHG intensity for a selected consumption category and compare results with pure LCA approach


  • Master student in a sustainability related field or interested in sustainability
  • Basic understanding of InputOutputAnalysis and LCA, Matlab or Python basics beneficial
  • Able to work remotely (but from October 2019 on we will have our first office space on the campus)
