Avantika Shastri

India

Avantika is a chemical engineer with a PhD in metabolic engineering from Purdue University. She has over 8 years of experience in applying life cycle thinking and LCA for petrochemicals, polymers and engineering thermoplastics businesses at SABIC. She has helped to develop and implement processes and tools to measure and steer sustainability in R&D portfolio management, and conducted LCAs to enable marketing, CDP reporting, and various other business decision support projects. A certified LCA practitioner (ACLCA 2016), she enjoys teaching and coaching junior team members into the arts and insights of LCA practice.

Bill Flanagan

USA

Bill Flanagan is Co-Founder and Director of Aspire Sustainability, a consultancy focused on product life cycle assessment (LCA) and sustainability strategies. He is also Chair, Board of Directors, of the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA), the professional membership and advocacy organization for LCA in North America. From 2007-2017 Bill was Director of GE’s Ecoassessment Center of Excellence and was responsible for developing GE’s product sustainability strategies. He has extensive leadership and teaming experience and has conducted LCA studies in a wide range of product categories. In 2014 Bill was awarded the Lifetime Individual LCA Leadership Award by the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA). Bill graduated from Virginia Tech and received a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Connecticut. He is a certified life cycle assessment professional (LCA CP).

Hassana Elzein

Canada

Hassana is currently completing her Ph.D. at the International Reference Centre for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes, and Services (CIRAIG) -Polytechnique Montreal. Her research focuses on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and analysis of time-dependent systems such as smart power grids. Hassana’s research interests include environmental protection, renewable energy, sustainability, and clean mobility. After obtaining a masters degree in petroleum engineering, Hassana delved into the environmental field. She has been active in the LCA community since 2014 and has presented and participated in the organization of various conferences and workshops. Currently, Hassana is the co-chair of the student committee of the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment (ACLCA). As a board member of PolyCarbone, Hassana has been actively working on promoting sustainable initiatives on Polytechnique’s campus.

Ivo Mersiowsky

Germany

Ivo’s mission is to assist change-makers in analysing product sustainability and developing sustainable business models. Since 2015, he is founder and managing partner of Quiridium, a consultancy start-up catalysing sustainability in product management and leadership. An environmental engineer by profession, Ivo holds a PhD on environmental behaviour of products and has more than twenty years of experience in various sustainability-related functions: Researcher and consultant on plastics waste management (Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, 1995—2002); in-house consultant life cycle & sustainability in the chemical industry (Solvay, 2003—2005); senior consultant product sustainability (Five Winds International, 2006—2008); business line manager sustainability management and member of the management team in a business assurance group (DEKRA Consulting, 2008—2014). As a part-time lecturer in international business management courses, Ivo coaches the next generation of decision-makers on integrating sustainability in their professional and private lives.

Kevin Harding

South Africa

Kevin is a chemical engineering graduate from the University of Cape Town with a PhD investigating life cycle aspects of industrial bioprocess systems.  He spent time as a consultant at Environmental Resources Management (ERM SA) before joining the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa).  As an associate professor at the University, he lecturers undergraduates across various courses and spends his research time investigating water related and LCA issues in mining, bioprocess and other industrial systems.  As co-founder of the Industrial and Mining Research Unit (IMWaRU), the group maintains projects across both the academic as well as commercial space to allow for practical solutions beyond just the theoretical.

Marcel Gómez

Spain

Marcel Gómez is a biologist (by the University of Barcelona) and environmental scientist (by the University of Geneva) seeking to approach Life Cycle Thinking to private and public organizations. He founded Marcel Gómez Consultoría Ambiental in 2006, one of the first consultancy offices specialized in Life Cycle Thinking in Spain, offering also energy efficiency services. He is member of the Technical Committee CTN 198 Sustainability in construction (Spanish branch of the CEN/TC 350), of the Evaluation board of certification bodies by the Entidad Mexicana de Acreditación (Mexico), of the working group on LCA of the Green Building Council Europe on LEED and of the Aeronautic Cluster of Madrid (Spain). He has a wide experience on Life Cycle Management (implementation/verification of Environmental Products Declarations, product and organization Carbon Footprint implementation/verification, sustainability in construction including LEVELs European methodology, Life Cycle Costing, European research projects, etc.) and energy efficiency consultancy (industry, public services and buildings).

Marzia Traverso*

Germany

Marzia is a full professor and head of the Institute and Chair of Sustainability in Civil Engineering at RWTH Aachen University since 1 June 2017. She holds a PhD of Environmental Technical Physics of University of Palermo, and is an environmental engineer, working in the field of Life Cycle Assessment and sustainability performance of building, textile and transport sector. From May 2016 – April 2017 she worked as Scientific Officer at European Commission, JRC Seville in the Product Bureau. From Nov. 2011 to March 2016, she was project manager at BMW Group, in the Sustainability Product department. From August 2008 to October 2011, Mazia did her post doc and worked as a scientific assistant and lecturer at the Chair of Sustainability Engineering of TU Berlin. Currently Marzia is a subject editor on Social life cycle Assessment in the International Journal of LCA. She is also a Member of the Steering Committee of Social LC Alliance and Italian Network of LCA and founded the non-profit organization iSuD.

Mireille Rack

United Kingdom

Mireille is a Sustainability / LCA Specialist within the Product Sustainability team at Tata Steel Europe. She has been working with life cycle approaches for 10 years, being first introduced to the concept whilst studying for an MSc in Environmental Technology at Imperial College London (ICL). She also obtained her PhD from ICL, applying LCA, LCC and SLCA for a triple bottom line sustainability assessment. Mireille worked as part of the Secretariat of the Life Cycle Initiative at UN Environment in Paris and as an academic researcher before joining the industry sector. She has a keen interest in promoting the relevance and capabilities of life cycle thinking and methodologies, and further developing the life cycle community. Mireille therefore founded and is currently co-leading the Imperial College Life Cycle Network, maintaining a visiting researcher status at ICL. The Imperial Network is facilitating the creation of a more formalised UK life cycle community.

Pia Wiche**

Chile

Pia is a consultant, professor and researcher in the areas of sustainable management and production. Pia has worked with UNEP and several research institutions for the development and deployment of life cycle thinking in different sectors. With an M.Sc. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from KAUST (Saudi Arabia) and a certificate in entrepreneurship from Cornell, Pia enjoys promoting new businesses and proposing new, sustainable business models that will create more value for the advance of society.

Yuki Hamilton Onda Kabe

Brazil

Yuki is a Chemical Engineer by training and a sustainability professional by choice who works as the in-house LCM expert at Braskem, largest petrochemical company in Latin America with headquarters in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Yuki studied chemical engineering at the University of Sao Paolo, Brazil with a specialization in environmental impact of fertilizer and life cycle assessment.

ISO-logoThe International Standards Organisation (ISO) has been invited to provide an additional perspective to the Board of Directors. Philippe Osset has been nominated by ISO TC 207 / SC 5 to represent ISO at the Board of Directors. ISO TC 207 / SC 5 is ISO’s Committee on Environmental Management and is responsible for setting all ISO life cycle standards such as the ISO 14040 series.
