Event Details

Workshop “Data-driven modelling for Sustainability Assessment”  DAMOST 2017 in conjunction with The 17th International Conference on Computational Science and its Applications (ICCSA) Confereence, to take place from July 3 – 6, 2017 in Trieste, Italy: http://www.iccsa.org/

Description

The implementation process of sustainable development requires improving the knowledge on linkages between the key types of resources, the resources and the environment and the resources and the economy. The underlying challenges are inherently integrated and shall be pursued in combination. This calls for an integrated approach, which still suffers of a lack of cohesion in quantitative sustainability assessment tools and cooperation among different disciplines. A conceptual framework for life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) has been advanced in the sustainability assessment literature, but it still lacks of operationalization and full integration and poses numerous challenges, as well as numerous opportunities. This workshop aims at advancing on the path towards an integrated operational framework for *Quantitative Sustainability Assessment*, enhancing cooperation of scientists belonging to different disciplines.

The contributions to the workshop are expected to lie under the unifying framework offered by constraint-based sustainability, showing applications of computational tools such as (the list is by no means exhaustive) dynamical systems, simulation, constrained optimization, machine learning, artificial intelligence, software engineering, information visualization, human-computer interaction, computational geography, etc. Particularly welcomed are:

  1. applications of computational models and methods for decision-making to facilitate management and allocation of social, economic and environmental costs and benefits;
  2. computational models for monitoring, management and control of ecological, technical and social systems, including the definition of planetary boundaries;
  3. applications showing the potential and the alleged impacts of the deployment of ICT on sustainability.

A distinguishing feature of the workshop is therefore its interdisciplinary nature.

The programme committee especially requests high quality submissions on the following (but not limited to) Conference Themes:

  • Machine learning for environmental data analysis, modelling and visualization. Geostatistics, remote sensing and advanced Geographical Information Systems (GIS) applications;
  • Biophysically based models to study human interaction with ecosystem services;
  • Agent Based Modelling (ABM) for sustainability assessment;
  • Computational approaches for Life Cycle Costing;
  • Dynamic Life Cycle Inventory modelling;
  • Sensor networks for environmental data harvesting;
  • Network Analysis applications to natural and technological systems analysis;
  • Multi Objective Optimization involving environmental constraints;
  • Emergy accounting of complex systems;
  • Use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools for resource optimization;
  • Social data mining application to inform sustainability policies;
  • Uncertainty modelling (fuzzy techniques, Bayesian approaches, etc.);

Each paper will be independently reviewed by 3 programme committee members. Their individual scores will be evaluated by a small sub-committee and result in one of the following final decisions: accepted, or accepted on the condition that suggestions for improvement will be incorporated, or rejected. Notification of this decision will take place in April 2017.

Chairs

  • Antonino Marvuglia (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, Luxembourg),
  • Mikhail Kanevski (University of Lausanne, Switzerland),
  • Beniamino Murgante (University of Basilicata, Italy)
  • Janusz Starczewski (Częstochowa University of Technology, Poland)
