We recently hosted our final 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗫 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 of the year, bringing together the FSLCI community to discuss the 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 (𝗗𝗣𝗣) and what it means for LCA.

The discussion made clear: while the DPP has the potential to transform sustainability data, significant challenges remain — especially for the LCA community.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲:

⏳ 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴
Participants highlighted ongoing delays in delegated acts under the ESPR framework. Battery passport rules, in particular, have been postponed multiple times, making it difficult for companies to plan and prepare for compliance.

📐 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
A major concern was how to align different Life Cycle approaches — including PEF, ISO standards, and EPDs — across product sectors. Without harmonization, there is a real risk of inconsistent data and limited comparability along supply chains.

🗂️ 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
The European Commission’s plan to develop its own LCA database (expected around 2027) raised questions about interaction with existing commercial databases. Participants warned that companies could face double reporting obligations and noted the currently limited collaboration between public institutions and established database providers.

🔐 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝘃𝘀. 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆
While the DPP aims to increase transparency, participants noted that manufacturers remain cautious about sharing detailed lifecycle inventory data. The group discussed the need for verification mechanisms that ensure data accuracy while at the same time protecting confidential information and allowing for different levels of data visibility.

🔗 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘁𝘆
SMEs were identified as particularly vulnerable if required to deliver data in multiple formats for different regulations and regions. For complex products, such as vehicles, consistent data from many suppliers using different standards remains a major challenge — reinforcing the need for automation and translation tools.

🤝 𝗔 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁
A strong message from the session: the LCA community should actively engage with policymakers and the European Commission, providing technical expertise and practical recommendations — rather than leaving key design decisions solely to actors driven by business interests.
