The well-known 3 Rs waste hierarchy lists and ranks the ways to manage waste and serves as a basis for several environmental and waste management policies, among which the EU Waste Framework Directive. This preference scale implies that over recycling strategies, reuse and waste reduction schemes should be prefered.

Is this hierarchy always relevant from an environmental point of view? What can be the place of other Rs (Repurpose, Recover…) in this scale? Do all types of materials and products comply similarly to this ranking?

This presentation will examine the relevance 3Rs waste hierarchy from a life cycle perspective based on a review of LCA literature, with a focus on examples from the packaging sector.
