Workshop 08: Forecasting Under Uncertainty: LCA Approaches to Guide Mid-term Decarbonization in Supply Chains with Short Innovation Cycles

Main Presenter: Sarah-Jane Baur

Co-Authors:Nikhil Sampath Rao Torruri

Workshop Format: Short input by selected speakers; Group discussion; Roundtable

The information technology sector is pursuing highly ambitious climate targets, with many companies aiming for net zero by 2030, relying substantially on offsetting. To reduce this dependence, decarbonization must continue well beyond 2030. Semiconductor production is a major source of manufacturing related emissions, creating a growing need to assess and forecast semiconductor level carbon footprints.
This creates a significant challenge for prospective LCAs, particularly Product Carbon Footprints, as semiconductor technologies evolve rapidly. Chip architectures in 5-20 years will differ from today’s designs, yet credible forecasts are essential for effective interventions in supply chains, manufacturing, and energy sourcing. Unlike lab to fab scaling, this requires projecting technologies into future manufacturing environments.
This workshop provides a structured forum to discuss how LCA methodologies can adapt to forward looking needs and how they can support corporate climate strategy. Participants will explore key questions in a cross-sector dialogue:
– Which sectors face comparable shifts in LCA expectations?
– How can robust product and manufacturing scenarios be developed amid rapid technological change?
– What methods can verify assumptions and impact assessment results?
– How can these approaches remain practical and scalable?
The workshop aims to consolidate practices, identify limitations, and articulate priority methodological questions for further development of prospective LCA.
