Workshop 10: Exchange on training LCA in industry

Main Presenter: Tim Langhorst

Co-Authors:Heather Logan

Workshop Format: Group discussion; Break-out groups; Mind-mapping; Other

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining strategic relevance for corporate decision-making. Regulatory developments such as the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), with similar instruments emerging globally, demonstrate strong political interest. At the same time, companies increasingly recognize sustainability as a driver of revenue and competitive advantage (Deloitte, C-Suite Sustainability Report, 2025).
As sustainability teams grow and the scope of topics expands, the need for efficient and effective on-the-job training becomes central. One key challenge is that industrial LCA is inherently interdisciplinary: practitioners come from diverse professional backgrounds and roles, yet must develop a shared understanding of LCA concepts and collaborate effectively. In this context, industry can learn from academia, where LCA education has seen growing interest in recent years for multiple disciplines (Viere et al., Global state of the art of teaching life cycle assessment in higher education, 2024).
Goal:
This workshop fosters expert exchange on challenges, best practices, and innovative concepts for teaching and learning LCA on -the-job.
Participants are invited to:
• Share their experiences in learning and/or teaching LCA in academia and/or in an industrial context
• Actively engage through a World Café format
Expected outcomes:
• Clearer understanding of challenges and best practices
• Insights into differences and commonalities between LCA education in academia and industry
• Structured summary of results that may be presented to a broader LCIC audience and serve as a starting point for further collaboration and a joint publication
