This study presents an integrated framework for the prospective environmental impact assessment of emerging technologies by using Prospective LCA (pLCA). pLCA is employed as a scenario-based approach. Future technological configurations are explored by varying key parameters such as energy consumption, process efficiency, and material flows. Environmental performance is assessed with a focus on Global Warming Potential (GWP) and overall life cycle impacts. The Design for Feasible Futures (DF3) Framework is proposed to accompany the scenario generation for pLCA as a method of managing stakeholders interactions and involvement.
The framework is planned for the demonstration through a case study on mineral carbonation of steel slags, an emerging carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology.
