Focus on the 4th step of Safe and sustainable by design tool: Life Cycle Assessment of BIO-SUSHY Horizon Europe project

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used to provide water and oil impermeability in various applications as non-stick pan surfaces, water- and dirt-repellent textile treatments, food-contact dirt-repellent coating on paper or cardboard packaging or specific paints. Unfortunately, it has now been established that these products lead to health problems such as neurodegenerative diseases, cancer and the reduction of fertility while they also cause considerable environmental damage.
The aim of the BIO-SUSHY Horizon Europe project (GA number: 101091464) is to replace PFAS with innovative coating solutions developed using Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) methodology. BIO-SUSHY focuses on 3 target markets: textiles, food packaging and glass coatings (packaging for cosmetic applications).
To achieve BIO-SUSHY’s objectives, research is based on 3 pillars: the development of innovative coatings (supported by computational modelling of performance), toxicity assessment and SSbD methodology to guarantee safety and environmental performance, with the aim of reducing environmental impact by 25%.
The aim of this presentation is to introduce the 4 steps of the SSbD methodology (hazard properties of the material; human health and safety of production processes; environmental and human health risks in the use phase) and in particular its 4th step: environmental impacts along the entire life cycle. Thus, the first results obtained for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on glass and paper coatings will be presented. Finally, the presentation will discuss how LCA is implemented in the BIO-SUSHY project to comply the European Commission Recommendation on safe and sustainable requirements, thereby helping to achieve the policy ambition defined in the EU’s chemical strategy for sustainability toward a toxic-free environment.
