Workshop 13: Building a Strong Foundation: Certifying LCA Skills in Higher Education Programs

Many universities around the world teach LCA skills in different study programs at different levels. Viere et al. 2020 identified 5 levels of competence for LCA to be achieved during BSc, MSc and PhD programs.
With the increasing global demand for LCA practitioners, a credible and internationally recognized certification for entry level LCA positions would allow graduates to prove their acquired LCA skills in higher education when entering the job market and help employers to identify suitable candidates with LCA related competences.

However, currently there is no certifications for entry level LCA skills available. The currently most relevant certification for LCA skills is the LCACP certification by ACLA. This certification starts at a very experienced level with several years of LCA related experience, which cannot be achieved by students at their graduation.

Accordingly, this suggested workshop aims to discuss the requirements and responsibilities for the establishment of an internationally recognized LCA certification scheme for university graduates with entry level LCA skills. Key issues are:

  1. The needs of graduates and employers for such a certification scheme
  2. Competence levels of certification, e.g. at BSc, MSc and PHd level.
  3. Certification process and certification body

As a result of this workshop, we would like to connect different parties interested in such a certification and to decide whether to proceed with the idea of an international LCA certification scheme for graduates and to discuss potential avenues for collaboration within this topic.
