As the circular economy gains momentum, “recycled content” has become a key metric for sustainability. However, a significant gap exists between how recycled content is defined between standards versus life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology.

Based on a review of over 10 international standards and guidance documents, this talk highlights a critical discrepancy: recycled content percentages do not always correlate with impact indicators, even for the same process or technology.

LCA practitioners must thus exercise caution when integrating recycled content data and how to navigate these conflicting definitions to ensure accurate environmental calculations.
