Workshop 04: Bringing the power of life-cycle thinking and AI together: A case study from textile sector

Main Presenter: Sanjeevan Bajaj, Sunil Kumar Palli

Co-Authors:Madhuri Nigam

Workshop Format: Short input by selected speakers; Group discussion; Break-out groups; Other

Despite growing awareness of sustainability imperatives, SMEs face significant resource constraints and knowledge barriers that inhibit meaningful climate action. Meanwhile, large corporates relying on SME suppliers struggle to obtain the high-quality emissions data they need. This workshop presents a concept for an SME-focused, LCA-based decision support solution designed to bridge this gap — making sustainability innovation accessible regardless of business size.

Using a textile SME case study, participants will explore the automation of a previously manual LCA, covering the full theory of change: from manufacturing processes and emissions sources through data capture, results dashboards, and the methodology underpinning the outputs. The solution integrates AI-assisted self-assessment and learning features aligned with recognised standards, guidelines, and best practices.

The workshop aims to validate the solution’s methodological robustness and fit with SME needs, while surfacing adoption enablers, barriers, and practical challenges. Through structured discussion and co-design, participants will contribute to practical recommendations for simplifying LCA without sacrificing credibility, a validated set of core tool requirements, and a roadmap for refining and launching the solution. The session also serves as a space for networking among practitioners committed to scaling accessible, data-driven sustainability tools.
