Workshop 02: Developing an LCA database for the European Commission – Advancing Sustainability through Policy and Industry Engagement

Main Presenter:    Laura Stellner

Co-Authors:   Anna Ossolińska     Raoul Meys

In response to the global need to address climate change, the chemical industry seeks sustainable strategies. To evaluate such strategies, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is pivotal, offering a holistic view of environmental impacts across product life cycles. However, the complex and global value chains in the chemical industry leads to the challenge of data availability to perform LCA studies.

To mitigate this gap, the European Commission set up a project to provide a core database which is compliant with the Product Environmental Footprint standard and covers a broad range of sectors, from energy to food. In this project by the European Commission, Carbon Minds is tasked with the development of chemical datasets. Moreover, the project strives to enhance data relevance and quality by industry association involvement.

Overall, the workshop delves into the structure of the project scope, set up and structure. In particular, the workshop will cover the following three parts:

  1. General principles to model global chemical value chains from an LCA perspective.
  2. Project scope for the core database.
  3. Discussion with participants about the most productive way to engage with industry associations.

Participants engage in fruitful discussions, concluding with insights for practical application and future steps.
