A company wishing to market its product as environmentally friendly in several EU Member States faces a confusing range of choices of methods and initiatives for quantifying and communicating its environmental performance.
The European Commission proposed the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) and Organisation Environmental Footprint (OEF) methods as a common way of measuring the environmental performance of products and organizations, adopting in December 2021 the revised Recommendation on the use of Environmental Footprint methods.
The methods were tested between 2013-2018 and the European Commission is now implementing a transition phase to include new methodological developments, to monitor and further develop Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules (PEFCRs) and Organisation Environmental Footprint Sector Rules (OEFSRs) as well as to explore how to incorporate them in upcoming policies and initiatives.
The 2020 Circular Economy Action Plan foresees that “the Commission will also propose that companies substantiate their environmental claims using PEF and OEF methods”. It is part of a set of interrelated initiatives to establish a strong and coherent product policy framework that will make sustainable products, services and business models the norm, and not the exception.
The Green Claims Initiative, the proposal on Empowering the consumer for the green transition and the Proposal for Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation are key milestones in this path .
During the workshop, these topics were presented and discussed. This workshop is part of a set of EF capacity building events that the Directorate-General for the Environment of the European Commission is implementing to raise awareness on the principles, characteristics and opportunities related to the EF methods.
